This is one of my favorite Dumas novels. It takes place during the reign of Henri III and the main characters and the story are very interesting. The interaction of King Henri with his buffoon Chicot is quite witty. It is said that the author took some liberties with history in making Bussy more heroic than he really was. I am a fan of Alexandre Dumas in general and this book did not disappoint me. On the contrary, it had me sitting on the edge of my chair during the day, while I spent many a sleepless night reading it. So, I will not attempt to say a single word about the plot. What I will say though, is that the scene of the assassination of Bussy is so vivid and literary powerful that I thought I was actually there witnessing all this, that it would have moved me to tears had it not been for the indignation one feels when he reads about the epic but tragic end of such a hero. But all the characters in general are excellently portrayed, especially Chicot and the dialogues between him and the king are particularly witty and humorous with nice messages hidden underneath this mask of mirth. These are passages one wants to write down and always remenber. To all the merits of the book, I will add the insight Dumas gives of the intrigues, politics, historical events and customs of the late 16th century. This kindle edition of the book is generally quite faithful, I have however the inpression that at some very few points certain paragraphs are missing which can be read in a printed version. Also, there is no active table of contents. These disadvantages however did not spoil my enjoyment of the book and all in all I would give it more than just five stars if that were possible. Whoever reads it is in for an imaginary journey he will not easily forget...

This has all the important Dumas elements. It has great characters, entertaining conversations, intrigue, and, of course, many amazing adventures.
